Vector Analysis

This map, made in ArcGIS, illustrates possible campsite locations in the De Soto National Forest near Hattiesburg, Mississippi. These areas are identified as being within three hundred meters of a road and within one hundred fifty meters of a lake or five hundred meters of a rivers. The regions are also color-coded into three area classes, with the darkest orange representing the areas which comprise the greatest percentage of the whole.

Throughout this project, I learned how to conduct vector analysis and used a variety of geoprocessing tools to conduct complex selections based on feature attributes and distances. I created the above map using a fixed distance buffer and a variable distance buffer and performed a union of the resulting shapes, then erased designated conservation areas from the selection area. 

I also analyzed a group of datasets related to Escambia County public services and superact risk features, conducting actions including using select by location to find features within, finding intersecting features, and spatially joining tables.

    For my final GIS project, I analyzed factors involved in planning the Bobwhite-Manatee Transmission Line. In 2006, Florida Power and Light sent out a letter detailing their planning of the Bobwhite-Manatee transmission line, which crosses the Manatee-Sarasota County border. There were many issues at play in the decision-making process, and here we analyze four of them: impact of the preferred corridor on environmentally-sensitive lands, the homes and privately-owned lands in and near the preferred corridor, the schools within and near the preferred corridor, and the length and resulting cost of the proposed transmission line. Cartography: UWF Main Campus Location Map

  This map shows the location of the University of West Florida Main Campus, including an inset map demonstrating the location of Escambia County within Florida. It also includes major highways, rivers, and cities within Escambia County. In this module, I learned about and experienced the cartographic process. I learned what essential elements I must include in all my maps from here on, as well as how to include them. Principles of design and layout creation were major learning outcomes. I also gained experience finding and exploring metadata. First, I learned to view and explore metadata within ArcGIS, and using these techniques, I noted important information about the sources and forms of the data used in this project.
